Take Back the Land: Join the Fight Against Feral Rabbits

Feral rabbits are more than a nuisance—they're a threat to our farms, land, ecosystems, and native wildlife. Let's take up the fight in the Dandenong Ranges to learn, act, and protect our community.

Feral Rabbit Group - Dandenong Ranges

We are a group of community members, interested in learning how to combat and manage the feral rabbit issue. We will be holding a feral rabbit "bootcamp" in October and are inviting community members across the hills to Express Your Interest if you would like to be involved. (This will be free).

Community Actions

As a community we can combat Feral Rabbits in the Dandenong Ranges, however it must be done as a community (or they will just move back in if neighbours are not involved).

Fencing

Fencing can be an expensive exercise to manage rabbits and the cost is bore by the landowner.

Hunting/Shooting

Hunting and shooting of Feral Rabbits can be effective on farming land, however is not available to rural land holders unless a permit is obtained.

Ripping Warrens

Ripping Warrens with large machinery, can be an effective strategy, however unless other measures are used, Feral Rabbits will continue to seek areas under houses, in bush for protection until they can build burrows again.

Baiting

Baiting can also be effective for dealing with Feral Rabbits, however this strategy requires careful consideration to ensure wildlife is protected and domestic animals are not impacted.

Biological

Biological methods are already in the environment, these include Myxomatosis and Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), or calicivirus, they cycle through every few years, however feral rabbits are becoming resistant.

Other methods

Other methods include fumigation, implosion of warrens, introducing Owl boxes and netting.
